Specimen Requirements
Patient Preparation: None
Container/Tube
Preferred/Acceptable: Greiner 9 mL lithium heparin (green-top) tube provided by SLCH Core lab. Call laboratory at 314-454-4268 for specific collection tube needed.
Collection Volume:
Adults and children ≥10 years: 6 mL whole blood
Pediatric 2-9 years of age: 4 mL whole blood
Pediatric <2 years of age: 2 mL whole blood
Immunocompromised Adults and children ≥10 years: 9 mL whole blood
Submission Container/Tube: If specimen is coming from outside facility, send whole blood in original collection container.
Special Instructions: Immediately invert tube gently 8-10 times after collection to ensure proper mixing of blood and anticoagulant (this will avoid specimen clotting). Do not overfill.
