Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

Specimen Type: Urine, 24 hour

Container/Tube: Plain brown urine container

Specimen Volume: Entire collection

Collection Instructions: No additive. Refrigerate specimen during collection.

Additional Information:

1. Starting and ending times of collection are required.

2. See Urine Collection in Special Instructions for additional information.

3. Collection periods <20 hours will be ordered as a timed-urine collection.

4. Collection periods >48 hours require approval from the Laboratory Medicine resident before analysis.

Specimen Volume: 20 mL from a first-morning collection.

Gel Electrophoresis/Immunoprecipitation

Note: This test is automatically performed when #5309 Protein Electrophoresis, 24 Hour, Urine is ordered. A pathologist interpretation will be preformed, at an additional charge. 

Note: Methods are not standardized. It is best to maintain a consistent method and laboratory. Caution should be used when quantitatively comparing results from different labs.

Alternate Tube:

Plain, brown urine container preferred; any clean container will be accepted.

Analyte Stability:

24 hours at ambient temperature is acceptable; refrigeration during collection is preferred.

Laboratory Processing Instructions:

Test performed in BJH Core Lab. If ordered with a urine protein electrophoresis; this is a duplicate and should be cancelled. If ordered alone; do not send an aliquot to Chemistry for total protein, and concentrate 100x. Keep a 10-mL urine specimen in refrigerator for possible future use. Place concentrate in appropriate rack.
