  Lavender-top (EDTA) tube
Collection Volume: 3.0 mL (minimum 1.0 mL)

Submission Container/Tube: If specimen is coming from outside facility, send whole blood in original collection container. Keep specimen at ambient temperature only.

Special Instructions: 

  • Immediately invert tube gently 8-10 times after collection to ensure proper mixing of blood and anticoagulant (this will avoid specimen clotting).
  • Forward promptly at ambient temperature.
  • Complete a "Cincinnati Children's DIL test requistion form" to send with specimen.

Lab Processing Instructions: DO NOT SPIN. Send specimen in original vacutainer.

  • NOTE: Keep sample as ambient whole blood for delivery to CCH-DIL lab within 24 hours of collection. If delivery cannot occur within 24 hours, separate plasma/serum from cells within 24 hours of collection. Freeze two 0.5mL plasma/serum aliquots immediately at -20°C or lower. Separated plasma/serum samples must be sent with enough dry ice to maintain a frozen state until received at CCH-DIL.

  • The CCH-DIL operates Mon-Fri, 8:00am to 5:00pm (EST). Testing is not performed and samples cannot be received on weekends/certain holidays. First Overnight shipping is strongly recommended. Please call/fax (513-636-4685/513-636-3861) the tracking number so they may better track specimen.
  • Send a completed "CCH-DIL test requistion" form with specimen.
  • Specimen MUST be received at CCH within 24 hours of collection if sending whole blood (preferred). If unable to make shippment within 24 hours (weekends/holidays; specimen coll prior to 1000 a.m. or missed evening shipping) process specimen as above and freeze for next shipping opportunity and ship frozen on dry ice.
