Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Blood from mother (and father if available)

Preferred:
Yellow-top ACD-A Vacutainer®s from both mother and father (if available).
PLUS
Plain, red-top Vacutainer®(s) from mother
*NOTE: this is for initial testing of Maternal sample with paternal sample. If other NAT testing is selected, see requisition for specimen requirements.
Acceptable: Yellow-top ACD-B Vacutainer®s and Plain, red-top Vacutainer®
Collection Volume:
30.0 mL (minimum 20.0 mL) ACD-A whole blood from each parent
PLUS
20.0 mL (minimum 7.0 ml) whole blood in plain, red-top tube(s) from mother
Special Instructions:
1. Each sample must be clearly labeled with the full name of individual, date and time drawn.
2. Immediately invert Yellow-top ACD-A tube gently 8-10 times to ensure proper mixing of blood and anticoagulant.
3. Send a completed "Blood Center of Wisconsin, Platelet and Neutrophil Immunology Lab" requisition with specimen.

Lab Processing Instructions:
ACD (yellow-top): DO NOT SPIN
Red-top: centrifuge to separate and aliquot specimen into a screw-capped plastic transport vial.
Processed Volume:
30.0 mL ACD whole blood from each parent plus 10.0 mL serum from mother
(minimum 20.0 mL ACD whole blood (each individual) and 3.0 mL serum from mother)
Transport Temperature: Refrigerated
Analyte Stability: Samples must be received at BCW within 4 days of collection.
Note:
1. Ship specimen by overnight courier for next day delivery. Mark box "REFRIGERATE UPON ARRIVAL". Use sealed ice packs or set ice sealed in plastic bags. Protect whole blood samples from freezing by wrapping in paper toweling. See requisition for shipping address if needed.
2. Call laboratory (800-245-3117 ext 6255) if shipping samples near a major holiday.
3. Send a completed "Blood Center of Wisconsin, Platelet and Neutrophil Immunology Lab" requisition with specimen. BWC test code is dependent upon which or if both parent(s) samples are obtained. If just mother's sample, test code 5603 only. If samples are obtained on both parents, order both 5603 & 5703.
