Preferred: Gold SST gel tube

Acceptable: Plain red-top tube

Submission Container/Tube: If specimen is coming from outside facility aliquot processed sample into a plastic vial for transport within 1 hour.

Specimen Collection Volume: 2.0 mL (minimum 1.0 mL)

Special Instructions: Send to lab promptly

NOTE: Minimum volume does not allow for repeat analysis if necessary

Newborns: 

Male: 75-400 ng/dL
    1 – 7 Months: Levels decrease rapidly the first week to 20 – 50 ng/dL, then increase to 60 – 400 ng/dL (Mean = 190) between 20 – 60 days. Levels then decline to prepubertal range of < 2.5 – 10 by seven months.

Female: 20-64 ng/dL
    1 – 7 Months: Levels decrease during the first month to <10 ng/dL and remain there until puberty.

Males (1 – 10 Years): < 2.5 – 10 ng/dL
