Prealbumin has been shown to be useful in the assessment of nutritional states particularly in monitoring the response to nutritional support in the acutely ill patient. The short half-life of prealbumin (approximately 2 days) makes it a sensitive indicator of any changes affecting its synthesis or catabolism.
