Specimen Requirements

SPECIMEN MUST ARRIVE IN LABORATORY WITHIN 3 HOURS OF COLLECTION

Patient Preparation: If possible, include result of von Willebrand factor antigen with specimen

Container/Tube  
Preferred/Acceptable:
 Light blue-top (Citrate) tube (2.7 mL or 1.8 mL)
Collection Volume: Tube should be full

(Full is to marking on tube label. MINIMUM tube volume for collection is to marking on tube label but may go above line) 

Submission Container/Tube: If specimen is coming from outside facility either send specimen in orginal container STAT so can be processed within 4 hour stability or process and send to lab STAT in dry ice (processing instructions below)
Special Instructions: 

1.

Draw a discard tube prior to light-blue top tube.

2.

Tube(s) should remain stoppered. Allow vacutainer to fill by vacuum completely

3.

Immediately invert tube/microtainer® gently 8-10 times after collection to ensure proper mixing of blood and anticoagulant (this will avoid specimen clotting). Forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

4.

DO NOT underfill tube(s)

5.

Avoid hemolysis and heparin contamination of specimen. Blood should NOT be collected through an indwelling catheter or an A-V shunt.

Vacutainer®(s) that are under-filled/insufficient specimen

Clotted specimens.

Mislabeled or unlabeled specimens.

Lab Processing Instructions: Centrifuge specimen for 15 minutes. Transfer top two-thirds of plasma (minimum volume 0.5 mL) into a labeled 5-mL screw-capped, plastic vial for transport. Place aliquot vial in dry ice to freeze immediately.
Processed Volume: Send minimum of 0.4 mL citrated plasma
